Overview: Eats & Feats: Up Close

Eats & Feats: Up Close and Personal … Overview by Kelley Moore

Ok…. here’s my idea. I was listening on TLC or Discovery Channel about a young guy who, for a college project, documented with pictures everything he ate for a whole year, and has since published a book appropriately called

“Everything I Ate: A Year in the Life of My Mouth” by Tucker Shaw

From what I understand, he wasn’t trying to prove anything by doing it, but after gathering the data, he did find some interesting facts about his eating habits, etc. I haven’t read the book yet, but am planning on finding and reading it soon. I’ll fill you in on the details once I give it a read. Along those same lines, I want to begin a journey similar to his, but of course from a woman’s perspective… and what a woman (me) eats for a year, but add a category that I think is important also.. fitness workouts. I plan on being extremely honest with you in giving my stats of weight, age, mood, and an actual “look into my life and eating habits” for the purpose of seeing what reality really is … not just what we say we eat or do. I thought it might be fun for you to compare what you eat on a regular basis and how much or little you work out, in order to understand how we make decisions and what things influence us in our lives. On pre-examination, it is my belief that we as women are very hard on ourselves, that we feel guilt when we eat things that are not “healthy” foods or that we eat too much, and many times we cover, fib, or laugh at our habits as a mechanism to stay on even ground with other women. I’m going into this journey with the knowledge that I may unwillingly and unconsciously end up skewing the results, at least at first, of what I eat, i.e. I may eat more healthy foods, less snacks, etc. However, one thing I can tell you about myself is that I won’t be able to keep restraining myself for a long period of time, even with the best intentions (such as “diets” in the past). I CAN guarantee you, however, that I will document everything I eat with a pic, time/date stamp, and eventually my eating habits will fall into my “normal” eating pattern, and we’ll get to see some unblemished data. Along with that, I’ll give you my stats on weight, etc., on a regular basis, how often is still to be determined. And a quick pic of each workout that I do per day, whether it’s a formal class or playing volleyball with the church. As far as rules that I’m setting for myself for what warrants pics, I’m thinking that water or non-caloric drinks would be annoying as a pic, so I may just keep a daily count for statistical purposes, as well any sf gum, tictacs, etc. I’m anticipating this being a fun project, but with a family of five, “time” will be an issue because many times I eat on the fly, and may find it hard to get a pic of something I’m carrying out the door to eat on the way. Life is hard, though, and I’m trying to set in my mind that I’m going to have to schedule time for these delays, so that my data will be accurate and complete. As we go along, I’d love to hear from you and your opinions.. even if it’s something like “WOW, I can’t believe you eat so much !” In the back of my mind, I’ve always wondered what and how much other friends, women esp., eat. You know, the real truth. And had been planning on doing something like this for years. When I saw that someone had “beat me to the punch” on television, I decided, NO MORE DELAYS. The time is now. Perhaps, I can be the first woman to document such a thing. My projected starting date will be 9/1/10, enough time for me to research a little more and work out any anticipated kinks in the process. And, by the way, if you’d like to do the same project, I’d love to be following your life along the way, so let me know.
